Ceramic Fiber Blanket for a Compact Electric Infrared Heater | Australian Customer Case
Product: Ceramic Fiber Blanket
Application: Compact Electric Infrared Heater
Customer Market: Australia
Selected Thickness: 15 mm
Key Requirements: Non-combustible insulation, low thermal conductivity, compact dimensions and cost-effective performance
Customer Requirements: High Thermal Resistance in Limited Space
An Australian customer contacted MDLINSULATION to source a suitable ceramic fiber blanket for a compact electric infrared heater.
The customer required a non-combustible insulation material with a continuous service temperature of at least 600°C, preferably 800°C or higher. Due to limited installation space, the maximum insulation thickness was 20 mm, with preferred options of 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm.
The target finished size was approximately 400 × 400 mm with R50 rounded corners. The customer also specified the following thermal conductivity requirements:
- 0.07 W/m·K at 400°C
- 0.12 W/m·K at 600°C
- 0.16 W/m·K at 800°C
The main objective was to achieve the highest practical thermal resistance per unit thickness while keeping material costs under control.

Our Solution: 15 mm Ceramic Fiber Insulation Blanket
After reviewing the application and technical requirements, MDLINSULATION recommended a 15 mm ceramic fiber insulation blanket.
The selected material offered the following thermal conductivity performance:
| Parameter | Customer Requirement | Selected Product |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation Thickness | Maximum 20 mm | 15 mm |
| Thermal Conductivity at 400°C | 0.07 W/m·K | 0.065 W/m·K |
| Thermal Conductivity at 600°C | 0.12 W/m·K | 0.11 W/m·K |
| Thermal Conductivity at 800°C | 0.16 W/m·K | 0.16 W/m·K |
| Finished Dimensions | Approx. 400 × 400 mm | Custom cutting subject to confirmation |
| Corner Design | R50 | Custom cutting subject to drawing confirmation |
The selected ceramic fiber blanket met the customer’s specified thermal conductivity targets at 400°C and 800°C while remaining within the maximum thickness requirement.
Its lightweight, flexible structure also made it convenient to handle and cut, providing a practical option for preparing insulation components for compact heating equipment.
Why We Recommended Ceramic Fiber Blanket
1. Thermal Insulation Within a Limited Thickness
For compact electric infrared heaters, the available insulation space can limit the thickness of the material that can be installed.
The selected 15 mm ceramic fiber blanket achieved a thermal conductivity of 0.065 W/m·K at 400°C and 0.16 W/m·K at 800°C, matching or improving upon the corresponding customer targets.
At the same thickness, lower thermal conductivity generally means higher thermal resistance under comparable conditions. The final insulation performance also depends on installation, compression, contact conditions and the complete heater design.
2. Lightweight and Easy to Process
The flexible ceramic fiber insulation blanket is convenient to cut and process into application-specific shapes.
For this project, the customer required an approximate 400 × 400 mm finished component with R50 corners. Custom cutting can be evaluated against the customer’s drawing, dimensional tolerances and order quantity.
For equipment manufacturers, this type of processing can help simplify component preparation and reduce unnecessary on-site cutting.
3. A Practical Balance Between Performance and Cost
The customer was not simply looking for the thickest insulation material. The priority was to achieve the required thermal performance within a maximum thickness of 20 mm at the lowest practical cost.
The proposed 15 mm ceramic insulation blanket provided a practical balance between thermal conductivity, material thickness, ease of handling and purchasing cost.
This approach helps equipment manufacturers evaluate insulation based on actual operating requirements rather than selecting material thickness alone.
4. Temperature Rating and Safety Verification
The application required non-combustible insulation and continuous service at 600°C or higher, preferably 800°C.
Thermal conductivity alone does not establish continuous service temperature or non-combustibility. The selected grade must be verified against its technical data, applicable test documentation and the actual heater operating conditions.
The complete heater assembly should also be evaluated for installation clearances, electrical safety and applicable Australian requirements.

Project Results: A Suitable Insulation Option for Compact Heating Equipment
By reviewing the customer’s thermal conductivity targets, thickness limitations and processing requirements, MDLINSULATION identified a suitable 15 mm ceramic fiber blanket option.
The proposed solution offered:
- Thermal conductivity of 0.065 W/m·K at 400°C.
- Thermal conductivity of 0.16 W/m·K at 800°C.
- A thickness within the customer’s 20 mm maximum.
- Lightweight material that is easy to cut and handle.
- A practical balance between insulation performance and material cost.
- Potential for customized cutting to suit the required dimensions and corner design.
This Australian customer case illustrates how selecting ceramic fiber blanket insulation according to specific application requirements can help equipment manufacturers balance thermal performance, installation space and material cost.
